Mac Intel

Well, the thing I didn’t think would ever happen has happened.  The Mac is moving to Intel chips.  I’m feeling a bit better about it today after the initial shock wore off.  The move will be a good thing for the laptop line.  The pentium m is a nice processor and will really improve the line since a decent ppc portable chip has never materialized.  I’ll most likely buy one when they come out to use as my mac intel test machine.

I’m a bit more pessimistic about the desktop line. The ppc 970 is a great chip and is a lot nicer then then the intel offerings.  The main hope is in the future roadmaps.  Hopefully Intel has some nice things in the works.  As it stands now, I wouldn’t trade my dual 2.5 for pentium 4 based machine.

From a cocoa developers stand point, it doesn’t look like the change will effect me much.  Nothing I have is tied to the processor and should “just work” with a recompile.  I feel for developers of some of the older apps though.  They’re going to do a lot of work to produce universal binaries.
