New Widgets

Found a couple widgets today that look like they might actually be useful.  When Tiger first launched I found most of the widgets that Apple provides and the 3rd party ones at the time to be fairly useless.  There were a couple semi-useful ones like the Weather and Dictionary widgets, but nothing I need often.  Browsing through the download page tonight I found a couple that look like they might be useful.

  • TinyURL is a nice front end to the tiny url service to turn long ass URLs into something easy to pass around.
  • Air Traffic Control is a widget based on MacStumbler.  It shows the name, signal strength, and if the wireless networks your mac can see are encrypted.  It has already helped me figure out why my network has been acting funky the last couple days.  One of my neighbors switched over to the same channel I’m on.
  • DoBeDo and iCal Events are front ends to iCal.  Apple should have included widgets that do this.  I’ve never been a big iCal user, but the widgets look nice so I’m going to give them a try.  Maybe I’ll actually start keeping track of things outside of my head.

It’s nice to see useful widgets starting to appear.  Hopefully the trend continues.
